Spearhead Guide To Typical Engineering Tasks

This information is drawn from standard Australian and New Zealand Army manuals from the 1970's (which include the equivalent British Army texts from same period). It should be little different from World War II (especially the latter period) since much of the equipment and operational methods are virtually identical.

This list for Spearhead & Modern Spearhead assumes several factors:

Engineer Officers have had previous reconnaissance of area work is to be done,
Preparation has been possible and all required stores are available on site,
Best case situation exists, so use common sense if conditions are poor (e.g.
Bad Weather or working at night).

These tables assume a Spearhead or Modern Spearhead Turn Scale of 30 minutes - so if you prefer to think of the turn as the shorter end of the scale (15 minutes) you will need to basically double these times.

TASK

TROOPS REQUIRED

TIME TAKEN

NOTES

DEMOLITIONS
Disable Bridge 1 Engineer Platoon 4 turns
(2 hours)
Will still be usable by Infantry.
Destroy Bridge 1 Engineer Platoon 12-144 turns

Using camoflet method.
Collapse 1¼" of Tunnel 1 Engineer Platoon ½ turn
(15 minutes)
Assumes easy access.
Destroy Camp of Bunkers 1 Engineer Platoon 2 turns
(1 hour)
Battalion sized camp.
Note that a Disabled bridge will be fully usable by Infantry. It can also be used as the foundation for a Bailey Bridge that will take only half the normal time required to construct.

(2 hours)
Longer in rocky ground.

1¼" of Mixed  Mines 1 Engineer Platoon 6 turns
(3 hours)
Low-Med density.
MINE CLEARING

6 turns
(3 hours)

Daylight, Engineers and equipment arrived by Truck. +2 turns if Engineers approached on foot. Up to Double if at night, depending on the amount of Moon, etc.
ROAD CONSTRUCTION
18" Jeep Track through Jungle 1 Engineer Platoon 24 turns
(12 hours)
Requires Bulldozer stand. Won't stand up to wet weather.
18" Pre-Fab Road through Jungle 1 Engineer Platoon 4 to 16 Days Requires Bulldozer & Grader stands. Assumes terrain already cleared.
18" Pre-Fab Road through Savanagh or Grasslands 1 Engineer Platoon 32 turns
(16 hours)
Requires Grader stand.
Fill 9" of Road Cratering 1 Engineer Platoon 14 turns
(7 hours)
Requires Bulldozer Stand.

3 turns at night.
Assemble rafts for 1 Hvy Wpns Plt 1 Engineer Platoon 4 turns
(2 hours)
6 turns at night.
BRIDGES
1¼" long Lt Pontoon Bridge 1 Engineer Platoon 16 turns
(8 hours)
-2 turns/extra Engineer Platoon
1¼" Long Hvy Pontoon Bridge 1 Engineer Platoon 32 turns
(16 hours)
-2 turns/extra Engineer Platoon
Heavy Bailey Bridge 1 Engineer Platoon 10 turns
(5 hours)
per ¼"
-1 turn/extra Engineer Platoon
Note that no bridge can be constructed in less than 25% of the time listed (i.e. 4, 8, or 2.5 turns/¼"), regardless of the number of Engineer Platoons thrown at the task.

Some Nations also had specialist Labour/Pioneer units, that were primarily used for Engineering tasks, but lacked the full extent of training and skills that Engineers had. These may be used as follows for some Construction tasks (Digging Field Defences, or Building Roads or Camps); "For every 1 Engineer Platoon on a task, 3 Labour/Pioneer Platoons may assist, the whole group (of 4 stands) counting as if 4 Actual Engineer Platoons". Labour/Pioneer Platoons may also Dig Field Defences as if Engineers unassisted, every 3 Platoons counting as if 2 actual Engineer Platoons (assuming they have suitable equipment).

In some situations Combat Units (Rifle Companies) may be permitted to serve as Labour units for Engineers when Digging Field Defences. In this case every 1 Engineer Platoon assisted by 3 Rifle Platoons will count as 3 Actual Engineer Platoons.
