The Technology of Armour and Anti-Tank Weapons

The Technology of Armour and Anti-Tank Weapons is a fascinating subject, and one that is rife with numerous errors, misconceptions, and myths. There are many people out there better qualified than me to provide detailed technical discussion on various aspects of this area therefore I have concentrated on compiling data, documentation, and any related material that can assist others to draw their own conclusions.

One of the main features of this section are the results from U.S. Army tests during 1944 against captured German tanks (primarily PzKpfw V "Panthers") and related data.

Effect of Hardness upon resistance to Penetration - A brief example of the effect of increases in hardness on the ability of AP rounds to penetrate subject to Over and Under Matching - From U.S. Army.
Table of Compound Angles of Impact
- This table multiplies out the target's armour angle by the angle of shot in the horizontal plane to provide the actual equivalent "real" angle of the target's armour.
Determining Shot Penetration Characteristics
- How to determine the basic penetration capability of any calibre round at any velocity.
Effectiveness of British (& some U.S.) Tank Guns - This table provides basic effectiveness against Homogeneous type armour plate. Also includes typical ammo load ratios.
U.S. Army Firing Test No.1 - This test was conducted in May 1944 by the U.S. Army Headquarters, ETO, against "simulated" armoured targets using sheets of armour plate.
U.S. Army Firing Test No.2 - This test was conducted in July 1944 by the 1st U.S. Army against actual captured Panther Tanks.
U.S. Army Firing Test No.3 - This test was conducted in August 1944 by the 12th U.S. Army Group to analysis the effectiveness of 76mm and 17pdr AP rounds against captured Panther Tanks.
