Kings of War has been getting a reasonable following in Auckland over the last 12-18 months with the Second Edition (pub. 2015) and the Auckland Wargaming Club is looking at hosting a 1-day KoW Game Day in December featuring 2 ‘teams’ (Good vs. Evil) in a 2 round (game) format (full details at the link). I’ve been a bit missing in action with gaming of late, so hoping this might be a small incentive to get back into things. Recently got hold of the new second edition rule book and first look suggest the mechanics are largely as claimed and fairly simple and straight forward…
There is also an excellent on line army builder, which makes designing your first armies pretty simple and straight forward, and tournament and event play is greatly helped by the Clash of Kings 2018 Supplement which provides a guide to organised game events (you can find a brief review at Wargames Illustrated’s Website).
There is also an historical variant (named Kings of War Historical, of course), so depending on how the game plays that could be a nice option for larger fast-play Ancients games as an alternative to the more intense DBMM (or similar). There is a review here (from the original 2016 release of KoWH).
Finally if like me you’ve been hiding in a broom closet somewhere there’s a good general run down about KoW here at Wikipedia. I’m looking forward to having my first crack at KoW in the next few weeks with a view to joining in the AWC 1-day KoW Game Day.
Kings of War Vanguard
Vanguard is the new Fantasy Skirmish rules for Kings of War, designed for forces of around a dozen figures a side. I’ve pre-ordered my copy of these also, as they were at a special 50% off initial offer, and I’m keen to see if they will be a good option for making use of my assorted D&D RPG Figures, and nice alternative to go alongside Song of Blades & Heroes for fantasy skirmish games.
