John Curry’s “History Of Wargaming” Upate

On the 04 May 2012 John Curry sent the following update out concerning his “History of Wargaming” project for those who may not have seen it:

This is a short occasional update on the publishing progress of the History of Wargaming Project. The project has gone digital and about 20 of the books/rules are now available as e-books from the iBook Store, The Nook, or from www.lulu.com. The rest of the back catalogue will be converted in due course. Peter Perla’s Art of Wargaming, a book about the professional use of wargaming (as well as much interesting material about the history of wargaming), is now out in paperback. Table Top Teaser Anyone?

Table Top Teasers

A typical 'Teasers' introductory map - this is from Teaser No.3 in June 1978.

One of my enduring memories of wargaming as a teenager was getting my copy of Military Modelling and looking to see if there was a new “Table Top Teaser” by C. S. Grant (Charles Stewart Grant, the son of the author of “Battle – Practical Wargaming” and the single most inspiring wargaming book ever “The War Game”; Charles Grant); these ‘Teasers’ were a highlight of each issue (when present), and I used to imagine all sorts of ways to play them with the limited troops and resources I had at the time. It was especially trying waiting for the following issue with Part 2 of each Teaser, where the scenario was played out and an After Action Report (AAR) provided! While they only appeared over the five-year period 1978-1982 (there were 17 in total) they seemed to go on forever and always provided inspiration and a catalyst for ideas for future games. I had always planned to drag my old Military Modelling and Battle magazines out and scan these all into PDF or similar electronic format for my personal use, so I could more easily go through them when looking for inspiration or planning a new game.

New Table Top Teasers Book!

tabletopteasers1Battlegames Magazine announces the publication of the first Table Top Teasers wargaming scenario book by C. S. Grant.

My copy of Table Top Teasers Volume 1 has just arrived from Battlegames – and I must say most inspiring. I loved reading C.S. Grant’s teasers back in the 80’s (in Battle, Military Modelling, & Practical Wargamer), and although these are a compiled reprint of the first 12 that have appeared in Battlegames, they are still well worth the money with extra colour and a game report for each one. Additionally the book includes 2 additional ‘bonus’ teasers, including a reprint of the very first ever teaser from Battle Magazine in 1978!
